We have a good tradition for Physical Education and sport at Portchester School both during curriculum time and extra-curricular activities
FacilitiesOur facilities include extensive playing fields with football and rugby pitches, six tennis courts/outdoor basketball courts, an extensive athletics track in summer facilities, and an artificial cricket pitch and use of indoor nets. Indoor facilities include a gymnasium and main hall, a shared 6 court Sports Hall and a Health and Fitness Suite. Funding for a New Sports Hall has been secured which will include facilities such as a climbing wall.
Extra-curricularExtra-curricular activities are an extremely important part of Portchester School life with breakfast, lunchtime, after school and weekend activities taking place. Opportunities are offered in a variety of sports: football, rugby, table tennis, indoor rowing, judo, basketball, trampolining, golf, badminton, orienteering, athletics, tennis, softball and cricket, sailing, kayaking, skiing and snowboarding. All these activities and the associated social etiquette play an integral part in the development of pupils at Portchester School.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9)Key Stage 3 students receive four hours of PE in the two week cycle. The programme includes activities such as rugby, football, badminton, table tennis, basketball, trampolining, health and fitness, outdoor adventurous activities, athletics, tennis, cricket and softball. As well as teaching the students the physical skills of the above activities the PE Department tries to instil such disciplines as teamwork, leadership and an understanding of the need for a fit and healthy lifestyle. Within each sport students are assessed on their application and development of skills, evaluation of theirs and others performance and their knowledge of health and fitness.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

Key Stage 4 students receive two hours of PE per week; the Key Stage 4 Core PE programme includes the following:
- Competition and Performance (range of invasion, net, striking and fielding games)
- Health and Fitness (mix of weight training and cardiovascular activities)
- Participation (activities including trampolining and wave boarding)
- Sports Leadership (development of other personal and team skills for when students leave school)
The department aims to develop the individuals' skills in each activity as well as introducing the students to the ideas of coaching and officiating. In addition to the normal PE curriculum pupils may pursue their interest in this curriculum area further by opting to study the BTEC 1st Certificate in Sport, GCSE Physical Education or to take one of numerous leadership awards we offer. Our results in this subject area last year were outstanding (recognised nationally by the Youth Sports Trust), which is testament to an ever expanding and forward thinking department.
