Religious Education

Religious Education in the 21st Century is an important subject.

It teaches pupils to have respect for other people’s beliefs.

Pupils can compare religions and discover that they are not all the same.

Art, History, Politics and Drama reflect and interpret religious attitudes.

Pupils can research and find out what people believe and why.

Pupils can search for the sacred side of life and find out what is special and holy for themselves and others.

Pupils can decide if the teachings of religious leaders from the past are relevant today.

Pupils can express their opinions and beliefs and share them with others.

In KS3 pupils will gain an overview of each of the world religions and then compare and contrast the teachings and activities of individuals. They will be given facts but more importantly they will explore their own opinions and beliefs and begin to formulate questions and find answers.

Key personalities are studied; people who have shaped opinion in the 20th century. They include: Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Oscar Romero.

Pupils enjoy their RE lessons as there are opportunities for them to discuss contemporary issues, to watch DVD’s that challenge their misconceptions and help them develop into responsible citizens. They are able to make informed choices and contribute during discussions.
