Technology is a broad subject which covers a range of materials, processes and subject areas.
The subject areas include:

  • Resistant Material
  • Product Design
  • Food Technology
  • Electronics
  • Electronic Products (only available at Key Stage 4)

Aims of the department

Design & Technology gives all students the opportunity to gain:

  • skills of identifying, considering and solving problems
  • experience of working with different materials and technologies
  • essential preparation for their future life within a changing technological society
  • knowledge of investigations and experimental work, research and design work from Year 7-11
  • the ability to work independently using appropriate behaviour that enables students to succeed

Due to the practical based element of the department there is an emphasis on Health & Safety in the workshop environment

Key Stage 3

The curriculum is studied in units; students will participate in two lessons per week in one area and then rotate to cover the four subject areas per year. There are opportunities after school to extend learning in Food Technology and Product Design.

Key Stage 4

The subject areas during Key Stage 4 will assess the student’s ability to:

  • identify opportunities for design and technological activities through investigation
  • generate a design specification, explore a range of ideas and develop a realistic and appropriate solution
  • realise a solution in a variety of suitable materials by working to a plan and by taking account of resources
  • communicate and act upon an evaluation of the processes, products and effects of these design and technological activities
  • use ICT to communicate and handle information (includes CAD/CAM for Product Design)
Facilities

There is currently a programme of refurbishment and investment, a laser cutter enabling the use of CAD and CAM is available for students to use as part of practical lesson. The Electronic and Systems and Control teaching room has recently been refurbished with up-to-date equipment. Our food Technology kitchen has industrial style equipment suited to Catering courses, which includes newly installed fridges and pizza oven which is extremely popular.
