Portchester School is becoming an Eco School!
We are taking part in the Eco-Schools programme run by Keep Britain Tidy and hope to achieve their Green Flag award.
There are two levels(Bronze and Silver) before the Green Flag award and we have now achieved the Bronze Award and we are already halfway towards the Silver Award.

We now have a new Eco council made up of students and staff, which meets once a month to
discuss ways of making the school greener.
The school has already made a number of changes to make the school more energy and water efficient.

These include:
Paper Recycling
Passive Infra Red Lighting (we have saved £3500 this year on electricity)
Dual Flush Toilets (we have halved our use of water this year)
Windcatchers (natural ventilation) for first floor classrooms
Low wattage light bulbs
This is a great start, but there is lots more we can do.
Did you know?
The UK has only 1% of the world’s population, but produces 2.3% of the world’s carbon dioxide?
It costs £380 a day to heat the school in winter?
63% of people forget to switch lights off when leaving a room?
On average, each person in the UK uses 150 litres of water a day?
Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose?
Recycling 25 plastic bottles is enough to make one new fleece jacket?
Recycling one glass bottle or jar saves enough energy to run a computer game for 5 hours?
Recycling one tonne of paper saves the equivalent carbon dioxide of not driving 3700 miles?
